Rituals and Traditions

Fairfield City Council (1 other project)

Vietnamese New Year at Thien Vien Minh Quang, Canley Vale.

The Rituals and Traditions project, a response to the Cronulla riots, aimed to engage various sectors of our diverse community by showcasing their traditional culture and beliefs in order to increase cross-cultural understanding. Four communities groups - The Bonnyrigg Turkish Mosque, the Vietnamese Elderly Friendship Association, the Cabramatta Russian Orthodox Church and the Museum Volunteers were invited to showcase their celebrations of Ramada, Vietnamese Lunar New Year, Orthodox Easter and Christmas in Australia respectively. Each community provided their own stories, objects and photographs for the series of exhibitions and the catalogue. Danny Huynh, a local photographer, captured the vivid colour of each celebration.

This exhibition series and catalogue by the curator Kim Tao has allowed outsiders to view and understand the differences and the similarities in the celebrations helping to create an informed and engaged community that is tolerant and understands and appreciates cross-cultural values and beliefs.
