The BaRK Program improves literacy outcomes and reading confidence in school aged children through the assistance of registered therapy dogs and their handlers. Literacy specialists acknowledge that children, who are below their peers in reading skills are often intimidated by reading aloud in a group, often have lower self esteem, and view reading as a chore. BaRK engages children and increases their confidence and self-esteem, as the reading sessions are free from criticism, promoting an environment of unconditional acceptance and emotional support. Lake Macquarie's BaRK Program compliments work being done in local schools to address literacy and self esteem issues. It promotes reading outside of school times, and the library as a fun, social place free from criticism, with helpful staff. This innovative literacy program builds relationships and partnerships between Lake Macquarie City Library, local schools, the Delta Society of Australia, and participants and their families and carers.
