Women Sharing Stories

Port Macquarie Hastings Council

Rhonda Radley, local Aboriginal woman shares her story , artwork by Carol Randall- " A meeting of all togetherness" which describes the Port Macquarie-Hastings region from the mountains to the sea. The inner circle symbolises being together. The dots between the two circles symbolises a meeting place. The outer circle symbolises all. Together it represents- A meeting of all togetherness

The Outer story- women raising their hands in celebration and are joined together in unity. The landscape reflects the scenery from the surrounding area.

The Inner story- the river journeys down from the mountains to the sea. A bird overseeing the flow of water. This symbolising a life journey full of bends, fast and slow rhythms. When meeting the sea at the end of the river’s journey it is met by a dolphin, a symbol of wisdom. The birds flies over to protect and warn of dangers. It gives hope of a peaceful journey. The symbol of peace is seen to remind us of what we strive for within ourselves.

Blessing from the story- May all that travel the life’s journey be like the flow of the river meeting the openness of the sea and the wisdom that is there to share.

International Womens Day 08- the theme of Women Sharing Stories, at Birpai LALC, bringing Aboriginal and non Aboriginal women to share stories of paid and unpaid work. Over 100 women attended the event-excellent feedback, media and results. Commenced with Welcome to Country, performances by Gumbaggnir Elders Choir and Troppo Bob. Speakers presented their experiences with paid/unpaid work. Women spoke from the crowd, A key presenter was Rhonda Radley who shared her story "A meeting of all togetherness" copies of the image/story provided to all. The "Her Story" project was launched,a collection of women's stories from the Hastings. This event also sought to build understanding/reconciliation between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal women. An outcome is that a local womens group "Women Sharing Stories" has formed - the membership (open to all women) bring a photo/ momento/ item that is special to them. We continue to share stories that are moving, deeply personal and inspirational.
